If you are considering remodeling or finishing your basement, the first thing you needs to do is ensure that there are no problems with humidity or dampness. Basement dampness is a problem that is not uncommon to homeowners. Even if you aren’t finishing your basement, this is not a problem you should ignore, as it can then turn into a much more costly problem.

Basement Condensation & Basement Leakage

If you do not have obvious flows of water after each rain but have persistent dampness, your problem may be basement condensation rather than water leaking through the walls. If dampness seems to be a hot-weather problem, basement condensation is the likely culprit.

What Is Basement Condensation?
The warmer air is, the more moisture it can hold. Conversely, when air cools, it often has to release moisture. The dew on your lawn in the morning is moisture that was in the air until overnight temperatures dropped to the point where the air could not hold all of that moisture. The same thing happens when warm summer air that is loaded with moisture comes into contact with your glass of iced tea: the glass cools the air, causing the air to give up some moisture as water droplets on the outside of your glass. In your basement, condensation develops when you have relatively warm, moist air contacting the cool surface of the walls. As the walls cool the air, droplets form on the walls and you’ve got a damp basement.

Condensation Testing
If you think condensation might be the problem in your basement, there is a simple test. Securely tape a 10″ x 10″ piece of plastic wrap onto the basement wall in an area where you have noticed dampness, sealing the edges of the plastic wrap with the tape. Check on the plastic over the next few days. Eventually you will get moisture: if the moisture is on the wall side of the plastic, you’ve got a leak; if the moisture is on the room side of the plastic, you’ve got a condensation problem.

Basement Condensation Solutions

Condensation problems are usually easier to fix than leaks. Depending on the circumstances in your home, you have several lines of attack, all of which are designed to reduce the moisture in the air. Excess moisture commonly comes from clothes dryers, clothes lines, showers, cooking, and dew.

Sources of Basement Moisture
Concentrate on potential sources of basement moisture in or near the basement. If you have an indoor clothes line, consider moving it outdoors (at least in the warm summer months) or increasing air circulation (more on that later). Check your dryer to ensure that the exhaust vent doesn’t leak and has an unobstructed path to the outdoors. If your dryer exhaust is equipped with an energy saving switch, allowing you to exhaust air indoors or out, ensure that yours is set to outdoors and see if it takes care of the problem.

While uncommon, basement moisture sometimes comes from plumbing leaks. As you are checking your basement, be on the lookout for signs of a plumbing problem. One place to check is the pipes in the ceiling directly under the kitchen sink. Another problem location is the drain line that removes water from the indoor part of your central air conditioner. Some new high- efficiency furnaces have a drain line as well. If these lines are clogged or broken, they can put out a surprising amount of water.

Basement Exhaust fans. If there is a basement shower that gets a lot of use, install a basement exhaust fan that draws the damp air out of the house. Should these measures fail to resolve the problem, and you are rather certain that your problem is basement condensation, check moisture sources in other parts of the house. In very well insulated houses, even small amounts of basement moisture can be problematic. The kitchen and every bath should be equipped with a working exhaust fan. Make sure household members use the fans! (If you have trouble getting cooperation on this front, have the bathroom fans hooked up to the light switch. Whenever the light goes on, so does the fan.)

Air circulation in Your Basement
If the condensationin your basement is quite modest, and there are not obvious sources of excess moisture, increasing air circulation may resolve the problem. Some basements don’t have air-conditioning vents, but it is usually a simple matter to create a couple of vents. If you already have vents, make sure they are open.

If your basement is so packed with stuff that air can’t circulate anyway, additional vents will have little effect. You should get rid of some junk and create air passages around and between things. You especially want air to be able to flow easily along walls. If you do not have a central fan or air conditioner, or if it doesn’t seem to adequately stir the basement air, you might want to run a circulating fan in the basement for a few hours each day. While it won’t remove much moisture, it helps distribute the moisture evenly and eliminate damp spots.

Insulating Your Basement
Another approach to the condensation problem is to reduce the extent to which moist air contacts cool surfaces where it can condense. With this approach, you insulate exposed duct work, pipes, and walls - anywhere that water tends to condense. If the moist air can’t reach the cool surfaces, it won’t release water as condensation.

Water seepage is a common problem in most basements, and there is nothing more dangerous or damaging to your foundation than leaks. Especially if you live in wet areas with moist soil, your cellar could be at risk unless you take the proper preventative measures. Although basement waterproofing is essential, there is never just one way to do anything. The dilemma may be a common one, but there are always several options available.

Wet Basements
Cellars often leak due to water built-up on the outside of your foundation walls. Water collects in small pockets in the soil next to the foundation and begins to form hydrostatic pressure. Overtime this pressure increases until the moisture is literally pushed through the wall (often called “bleeding”). Usually you’ll find seepage in corners or in joints where the wall meets the floor. Though the process is typically slow going and probably won’t have immediate consequences, you’ll want to remedy the problem as soon as possible. If ignored, it won’t only ruin the look of your cellar; it’ll cause bigger setbacks down the road (bowed walls and cracked foundations).

Exterior Measures
Since there is only one way for water to get into your home, your first plan of action will be to examine the outside of your house to see if water is being properly diverted. Passive basement waterproofing systems are the primary preventative measure.
Sloping and Grading: Look at where the soil meets your walls. Is the ground sloping away from the foundation? This is the biggest reason why water penetrates the home: it has nowhere to go but in. If this is the case, you’ll want to hire a professional grader to help slope the ground downhill and away from the house.
Gutters: Are your gutters clean? If they’re clogged, the water will simply spill over the edge, down your walls, and into the foundation.
Downspouts Extensions: Even if water is being properly diverted, is it being carried far enough away? If your drainage systems allow water to seep back towards the home, then invest in some downspout extensions to ensure its permanent evacuation.

The Inside Scoop
Of course, this where the water ends up. So once you’ve located the sources of the leak, in order inhibit moisture spreading into other areas of the interior, here are a couple mitigation methods for those do-it-yourselfers.
Sealant: Buy a product that seals your entire interior. You patch up the joints and seams, prime the area, and then literally paint on a couple coats of sealer. It creates an impermeable, almost rubberized surface and repairs any leaks or cracks.
Baseboard Guards: These metal baseboards run along the seam where the wall meets the floor, are permanently sealed in place, and collect any escaping moisture. This collected water is then guided to a drain or sump pump. It’s a very effective system, but requires some prep work. For poured concrete, you’ll need to seal the corner joint above the baseboard. And for concrete block, holes may need to be drilled into the core of the bottom row in order to alleviate the hydrostatic pressure and let the water run free.

Drainage Systems
Basement waterproofing requires a lot of separate equipment: gutters, grading, sealing, etc. But don’t forget the primary sources of water diversion. Regularly check your interior drains to assure they’re not clogged. Also, it’s a great idea to invest in a sump pump that will literally push the water away from the home (this should also be regularly checked and monitored for maintenance). And if the problem gets worse, you may want to invest in some tile systems (digging up the basement floor, installing a drainage system in the foundation, and then replacing the flooring). However, for this particularly extensive chore, you’ll definitely want to hire a professional contractor trained in basement waterproofing systems.

On a recent poll, it was discovered that more people now than ever actually prefer bathing instead of taking a shower. People often underestimate how long they are spending in the bathroom in this day and age. Thus, it is very important to select the right bathtub for your residence. Surprisingly, most people tend not to spend enough time planning for their bathtubs and bathrooms in general.

If you are renovating or building a custom home, you should not hesitate on spending the correct amount of time on your bathtub. Next thing to consider will be the color of the bathtub. You do not need to be an interior designer to know that the color of yourbathtub should match the colors of your bedroom and most importantly your bathroom. The nice thing about bathtubs is that you are no longer limited to just the plain, porcelain, white tub anymore. There is a wide variety of colorss that you will be able to choose from. You can choose bold and vivid colors like green, red, blue, pink or green or stay more traditional with the light brown, typical white or off-white colors.

Finally and some will say most importantly, is the general features of the bathtub you choose. There are so many different features that come with the bathtubs now. Some of the typical features that have been around for a while are whirlpools or jet streams as well as handicap features such as small handles or bars. Currently, the market now offers multiple features with bathtubs. Some of my favorite features on bathtubs are walk-in bath tubs, free standing tubs (i.e., not attached to the floor) and traditional Japanese deep bathtubs that come with mini massagers.

Whatever the purpose for buying a new bathtub, do not skimp on spending time researching your various options. I completely believe that a big long soak inside a tub is a great way to finish off the day after working hard or playing with the kids.

You can find hampers that suit your needs online, or at any local department store.

When covering a bare wall, you may want to consider re-painting the walls and adding a few colorful bathroom accessories to offset the area. On the other hand, you could hang up some pictures of outdoors items. Perhaps hang a few candles on the wall, which will add a more comfortable setting for your bathroom. Remember candles are a relaxing source.

First you have to decide what design you want and color that will match your style of bathroom. The shower can be a very scary place when all those soap suds start to accumulate on the floor of your shower. One way to feel safer in the shower is to install a grab bar to the wall. Here are the tools you will need and directions to properly install a grab bar in your tiled bathroom shower.

Once you have acquired a grab bar you need to collect the tools needed to install it. The following are the tools you will need:

Philips-head screwdriver
Drill
1/8 inch masonry bit or glass and tile bit
Stud finder or a length of wire
Tape measure
Silicone caulk
Sharp awl or carbide glass and tile drill bit
Wood bit, 1/16 narrower than the size of mounting screws

The first thing that you will need to do to install your grab bar is to locate a wall stud. If you have access to a stud finder this will help greatly. Run the stud finder along the wall until a wall stud is located and mark the spot with a fine point marker. If you do not have an electronic stud finder, no worries, just take a 1/8 masonry bit or glass and tile bit and simply drill a hole into the grout. Then take your length of wire and make a bend in it. Put the wire in the hole and by spinning it left and right you should hit a stud. If you do not locate a stud, the hole that you just drilled can be filled with a slight bit of silicone caulk. Make sure to flatten the dab of silicone caulk so it does not protrude from the grout line, allow the caulk to dry for about three hours. If you have powdered grout handy, mix up a bit and patch the hole. Re-drill another hole until you locate a stud. When you do find a stud, measure 16 inches from that hole and you should be able to drill into another stud.

You will want to mark your stud locations so that you can measure from the base of the tub to determine the placement of your bar. Place your bar so that each end is over a stud and mark the screw holes that are in the mounting bracket.

To drill the mounting holes into tile you will need to make a starting point for the drill bit or else the bit will run across the tile. To make a starting point use a sharp awl or afore mentioned drill bit. Using your hand, twist the instrument on your make to make a slight impression on the tile; this will keep your drill bit from slipping. Do not use a punch or you are likely to crack your tile. Use the glass and tile bit to drill your hole. If using a masonry bit, place tape over the tile and drill slowly to avoid shattering the tile. You don?t want to break your tiles when screwing the mounting brackets on either so use a bit that is 1/32 wider than the size of the mounting screw you will be using. Start drilling the hole slowly and with even pressure so as not to slide off your mark. Use light pressure when drilling to avoid cracking the tile.

Make sure not to drill deeper than the tile and it backing. At this point, you will need to change your bit to the wood bit 1/16 narrower than the screw. This will make a pilot hole in the studs.

The final step is to mount the bar. Silicone caulk will need to be applied to the holes before mounting; this is to protect the wood and backing boards behind the tiles from leaking water. Simply screw the bar to the wall. You will want to use stainless steel screw or they will rust. Tighten the screws firmly making sure to not over tighten them or they will crack the tile.

You should now have your grab bar properly installed. You can now take a peaceful, relaxing shower and feel safer in the process.

Once you choose your threads remove the stabilizer by tearing it away and removing it from the left side. Avoid pulling your loops. Now you are ready to bind and scallop your new towels, adding the materials to the edge.

Oftentimes the contractor will make sure everything is up to code and will take care of permits from the city, but you want to make sure the space is properly approved, otherwise it is against the law and your attic renovation could be unsafe to live in.

But once everything is set in motion, attic conversions are a fun and unique way to add square footage to your home. Though they can be a bit expensive and the actual remodel could take several weeks (all of this is contingent upon the size of the space), the final result will create more value to your house and the extra room is well worth the expense.

If you think attic ladders are only good for climbing, you haven’t even scratched the surface of what they have to offer. Of course they are primarily function (How else are you supposed to get into your roof-level storage areas?), but they also come with a wide variety of options that have improved the product’s design, safety, and convenience.

Design
Most models are made out of wood or metal, both of which have their own pros and cons. Wood ladders are made out of dowels and are usually less expensive that metal units. Plus, they have a nice finish for easy painting or staining. Aluminum and fiberglass ladders are typically more expensive, but they are also sturdier and longer-lasting than wooden units. Plus, they can hold a significant amount of weight (up to 300 pounds) for assured protection when carrying heavy objects into your attic.

Besides their basic material, each ladder has its own unique design. Most are hinged into two or three unfolding sections (depending on the ceiling height) so that they take up less space in the actual attic when they lay flat against the floor. Most attic trapdoors come with a pull string that when gently tugged allows the hinged ladder to smoothly unfold on its own due to an easy-gliding spring system. However, there are a few versions out on the market right now which offer a more unique design:

Stairsteps: These ladders actually unfold into a temporary staircase, allowing for easy ascension into the attic; however they may cost a bit more and they also take up additional overhead clearance when they fold up into the storage space due to their more bulky and complicated construction.
Telescoping ladders: These aluminum ladders descend straight down from the ceiling and are adjustable in their length. Through a changeable lock-and-release system, these particular ladders can fit into any space and are especially useful in smaller areas, such as crawlspaces. Plus, since they can be compressed, they don’t take up any storage space in the attic itself.

Safety
Transporting personal items into an overhead storage space can be particularly dangerous since you since you have to lug heavy objects in your arms while still using your hands for climbing. Therefore, attic ladders have come with an assortment of safety features to make this chore more manageable. Although you should always make sure you get extra help when lifting bulkier items into an attic, some accessories may help the challenge become easier.

Handrails: Most ladders now come with built-on handrails, so you no longer have to depend solely on the rungs.
Lights: When opened, some ladders will come with attached lights that will automatically turn on so that you can see where you’re going.
No-slip Treads: Ladders now come with rubber stripping or other no-slip materials attached to each rung to reduce the chance of accident.

Since most homes do not have walk-in attics, many homeowners depend on the trapdoor and attic door combination. Of course these come with pull cords, but what if you have a high ceiling? Don’t worry: taller trapdoors come with a rod that can slip through the ring at the end of the pull string for easy leverage. Since ladders come with a spring system, not much strength is needed to pull it down, and often these systems shut slowly so there is no creaking or slamming upon closure. These folding ladders can also come with covers to protect the unit and to properly seal the trapdoor for energy efficient savings.

Though most units are pre-assembled for easy installation, if might be best to hire a professional for quality assurance. These tasks can probably be accomplished by the manufacturer, but any handyman should be able to complete the job. If you do decide to put the ladder in yourself, make sure you properly measure the opening of your attic before making the purchase so that you buy the appropriate-sized unit, and make sure you consult your manufacturer for advice beforehand because as with any home improvement: a product is only as good as its installation.

Many homeowners, when their family grows too big for a small house, will consider room extensions to create additional square footage and space. However, new additions can be expensive, time consuming, and can ruin the look of your exterior façade. Instead, many people decide it best to “build up” by remodeling their upstairs storage area. Things to Think About
Before you make a decision about a major attic renovation, you’ll first want to ask yourself a few questions. What isn’t there? Remember, many times these areas weren’t originally meant to be living spaces, so think about what will have to done to make it comfortable and safe. Unlike building additions where all the planning is customized to the new project, building around pre-constructed areas can be a pain: you could run into hidden problems by working with old materials and pre-existing structures.

So keep in mind all the things you’ll have to add in order to create an adequate living area. Do you have easy access? Many times these storage spaces come with pull down stairs, so you will probably have to add a walk-up staircase. This area is usually meant to be sealed up and ignored, so you’ll have to add windows, dormers, or sky-lights to brighten up the place. It can get really hot and very cold up there, so extra insulation will be required in your attic renovation. Also, there are the details of flooring, drywall, plumbing, and electrical work. So make sure you think about all the details you’ll need to invest in before calling the contractor.

The Code
Whenever you add extra living space to your home, you’ll need to get a building permit approved by the city. This also goes for attic conversions. Oftentimes the contractor will make sure everything is up to code and will take care of permits from the city, but you want to make sure the space is properly approved, otherwise it is against the law and your attic renovation could be unsafe to live in.

But once everything is set in motion, attic conversions are a fun and unique way to add square footage to your home. Though they can be a bit expensive and the actual remodel could take several weeks (all of this is contingent upon the size of the space), the final result will create more value to your house and the extra room is well worth the expense.

If you think attic ladders are only good for climbing, you haven’t even scratched the surface of what they have to offer. Of course they are primarily function (How else are you supposed to get into your roof-level storage areas?), but they also come with a wide variety of options that have improved the product’s design, safety, and convenience.

Design
Most models are made out of wood or metal, both of which have their own pros and cons. Wood ladders are made out of dowels and are usually less expensive that metal units. Plus, they have a nice finish for easy painting or staining. Aluminum and fiberglass ladders are typically more expensive, but they are also sturdier and longer-lasting than wooden units. Plus, they can hold a significant amount of weight (up to 300 pounds) for assured protection when carrying heavy objects into your attic.

Besides their basic material, each ladder has its own unique design. Most are hinged into two or three unfolding sections (depending on the ceiling height) so that they take up less space in the actual attic when they lay flat against the floor. Most attic trapdoors come with a pull string that when gently tugged allows the hinged ladder to smoothly unfold on its own due to an easy-gliding spring system. Stairsteps: These ladders actually unfold into a temporary staircase, allowing for easy ascension into the attic; however they may cost a bit more and they also take up additional overhead clearance when they fold up into the storage space due to their more bulky and complicated construction.
Telescoping ladders: These aluminum ladders descend straight down from the ceiling and are adjustable in their length. Through a changeable lock-and-release system, these particular ladders can fit into any space and are especially useful in smaller areas, such as crawlspaces. Plus, since they can be compressed, they don’t take up any storage space in the attic itself.

Safety
Transporting personal items into an overhead storage space can be particularly dangerous since you since you have to lug heavy objects in your arms while still using your hands for climbing. Therefore, attic ladders have come with an assortment of safety features to make this chore more manageable. Although you should always make sure you get extra help when lifting bulkier items into an attic, some accessories may help the challenge become easier.

Handrails: Most ladders now come with built-on handrails, so you no longer have to depend solely on the rungs.
Lights: When opened, some ladders will come with attached lights that will automatically turn on so that you can see where you’re going.
No-slip Treads: Ladders now come with rubber stripping or other no-slip materials attached to each rung to reduce the chance of accident.
No-slip Feet: On the feet of the ladder, there are now rubber tips available in order to secure balance and to ensure its hold to the floor while you climb.

Fireproofing: Ladders are usually proofed against fire to resist against further damage.

Convenience
Since most homes do not have walk-in attics, many homeowners depend on the trapdoor and attic door combination. Of course these come with pull cords, but what if you have a high ceiling? Don’t worry: taller trapdoors come with a rod that can slip through the ring at the end of the pull string for easy leverage. Since ladders come with a spring system, not much strength is needed to pull it down, and often these systems shut slowly so there is no creaking or slamming upon closure. These folding ladders can also come with covers to protect the unit and to properly seal the trapdoor for energy efficient savings.

Though most units are pre-assembled for easy installation, if might be best to hire a professional for quality assurance. These tasks can probably be accomplished by the manufacturer, but any handyman should be able to complete the job. If you do decide to put the ladder in yourself, make sure you properly measure the opening of your attic before making the purchase so that you buy the appropriate-sized unit, and make sure you consult your manufacturer for advice beforehand because as with any home improvement: a product is only as good as its installation.
